The Audi A8L has been completely redesigned for 2004. A sleeker body incorporates styling elements from the A4 and A6 models. Audi has tried to position the all-aluminum A8L as a viable alternative to the BMW 745i and Mercedes-Benz S430. The AWD A8L does offer traction advantages over the 7-Series, but is matched by the 4Matic-equipped S430.
Engine
* Low speed throttle response is relatively weak, but improves significantly above 3000 RPM.
* Excellent throttle response at highway speeds.
* Throaty V-8 burble at idle
* Engine note is muted at highway speeds, but changes to a urgent thrum at full throttle.
Transmission
* The 6-speed Tiptronic automatic shifts seamlessly in standard 'D' mode. Faster shifting is available when the shift lever is moved to the 'S' mode. Tiptronic mode allows sequential shifting through all six speeds.
* Flooring the throttle in 'D' mode results in a delay as the transmission downshifts.
* In 'S' mode the transmission shifts faster, but the shift quality is more abrupt than in 'D' mode.
Ride and Handling
* The A8L damping is biased towards a comfortable ride, in keeping with its 'sporty limousine' image.
* Road imperfections are easily absorbed by the suspension.
* The suspension tuning is a ideally suited for high-speed road trips.
* The long wheelbase and relatively slow steering make the A8L feel ponderous in tight turns. However, the Audi takes onramps and other long sweeping turns with enthusiasm.
* The optional 19-inch wheel/tire package may improve handling.
Interior
* Polished dark wood dash and door panels trim add a subtle, luxurious touch to the interior. Aluminum interior trim emphasizes the A8L's light alloy chassis and body panels.
* The stretched wheelbase allows ample rear seat legroom.
* The overall Audi MMI interface is awkward to use, and requires too much attention to be diverted from the task of driving. A thorough review of the owner's manual is required to fully comprehend the climate control & audio controls and functions.
* Climate control functions rely on cryptic pictographs that are non-intuitive. The owner's manual is required to understand the buttons functions.
* The test vehicle was equipped with optional ventilated seats and a massage function.
* Dashboard instruments are clearly backlit in white, with red needle indicators.
* An LCD trip computer, located between the speedometer and tachometer, shows vehicle status, radio stations and messages.
* A pivoting LCD panel shows all radio and climate control functions. The motorized panel hides away into the dashboard.
* Front seats are nicely bolstered and comfortable.
* Trunk cargo area is relatively shallow, but extends deep into interior. Short trunk lid has gas lifts, and swings out of the way when loading cargo. Trunk cargo net is available.
Exterior
* Clean, understated lines and a sleek profile characterize the A8L styling.
* Unlike the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the A8L has a more subtle presence.
* Aggressive 5-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels add a sporty touch.
* Bright LED taillights improve visibility at night.
* Dual exhausts in rear valance emphasize performance.

Audi has struggled to compete on an even footing with BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the large luxury sedan segment. The new A8L has the edge over its competitors in style and relative rarity. It is also unusual due to its all-aluminum chassis and body panels. The standard Quattro AWD should improve its appeal to potential customers in colder climates.
