Volkswagen
The 2025 ID. Buzz is the spiritual reincarnation of the classic Microbus, re-imagined for the electric future. The MEB architecture allows Volkswagen to return to its roots with the short overhangs and long wheelbase that marked out the original Microbus, a primary powerplant in the rear, and retro design cues that reinterpret the Bus design for the future. The modern package is finished off with cutting-edge EV technology and advanced driver assistance features.

The 2025 ID. Buzz will be offered in three trims-Pro S and Pro S Plus, along with a launch-only 1st Edition-with a 91-kWh battery and 282 horsepower for rear-wheel-drive models; 4Motion(R) all-wheel-drive models will have maximum horsepower of 335. Pro S models will be available in rear-wheel drive only; Pro S Plus and 1st Edition models offer both rear-wheel- and 4Motion all-wheel-drive configurations. Pricing for ID. Buzz models will start with the Pro S at an MSRP of $59,995, Pro S Plus at $63,495, and the launch-only 1st Edition at $65,495. Destination for all models is $1,550.
Exterior
Retro design cues modernized for today's times-like the oversized VW logo, expansive greenhouse, and D-pillar mounted air vents that recall the original Bus's cooling slots-give the ID. Buzz an unmistakable appearance.
At the front, the iconic V-shaped hood mirrors the classic Type 2 Bus and features a slim lateral bar that extends from either side of the illuminated emblem to connect to the premium LED projector headlights. Signature LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) with Volkswagen's Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) also add a touch of sophisticated style.
In profile, the ID. Buzz pays homage to its forebearers with modernized interpretations of classic design concepts. Short overhangs allow for the maximum utilization of space on a minimal vehicle footprint, while splitting the bodywork into upper and lower levels serves as a nod to the distinctive visual character of the original Bus. However, form followed function in the case of the T2, and that continues to be a guiding principle with the ID. Buzz. The iconic shape also has a low drag coefficient of 0.29h.
All ID. Buzz models are equipped with 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels that are a full four inches larger in diameter than a 1950 T2 model's, in retro-inspired disc design. First Edition models feature a white wheel with a matte silver disc, while the regular trims feature a silver wheel with a gloss black disc. The disc-style wheels are designed to optimize air flow for minimum drag losses, while also harking back to the original Microbus. All-season tires-235/50 R20 in the front, 265/45 R20 in the rear-are optimized for low rolling resistance.
Dual power-sliding rear doors provide excellent access to the third row and are replete with a modern take on the classic sliding windows, which are now also fully powered. Three-door KESSY(R) advanced keyless access with proximity lock and unlock and a power tailgate allows easy access for passengers and their belongings. The Easy Open & Close feature, which opens and closes the tailgate or either sliding door with a simple foot movement when the key is on the operator, comes standard on Pro S Plus and 1st Edition models, allowing easy access when hands are full. Pro S Plus models also add a manually-retractable tow hitch, which adds functionality and is completely hidden behind the rear bumper when retracted. Towing capacity is a maximum of 2600 lbs on RWD or 3500 lbs on 4Motion, with a braked trailer.
At the rear, the sleek retro form and horizontal light strip that connects the LED taillights while dividing the upper and lower sections of the bodywork ensure that the ID. Buzz looks like nothing else on the road. An oversized VW emblem also adorns the liftgate.
A rainbow of exterior colors will be available, dependent on trim level. Two-tone options will either pair a Candy White top with Energetic Orange, Pomelo Yellow, Blue Charcoal, Mahi Green, Metro Silver, Cabana Blue or Indium Grey below; or a Metro Silver top with Cherry Red below. Three single-tone options will be offered as well: Metro Silver, Candy White, and Deep Black Pearl.
The launch-only 1st Edition is available only with two-tone exterior, and adds unique 20-inch wheels, roof rail cross bars, and 1st Edition badging outside. Dimensionally, the ID. Buzz is about the same length and width as a VW Atlas Cross Sport and has more interior room than the 3-row Atlas, with a long wheelbase of 127.5 inches and an overall length of 195.4 inches. The ID. Buzz sits about 5 inches taller than the Atlas family at 76.2 inches, so it has a similar height and seating position to full-size pickups, and is 78.1 inches wide.
Interior
Three different color worlds accentuate the coolness of the modern Microbus and are carefully curated to complement the exterior colors. These interiors are currently unique to the North American models. The variety of interior and exterior color combinations will allow customers to express themselves with their ID. Buzz.
Moonlight, a moody dark interior, includes dark brown leatherette seats with white piping, blue door inserts and a dark wood-look dash, paired with black headliner. Dune, a bright, airy, coastal-inspired interior, pairs light grey leatherette seats with clay-colored piping, clay door inserts, and a light wood-look dash. This interior is standard on all 1st Edition models, along with heritage-inspired floor mats. Copper, the final combination, gives mid-century modern vibes with rich brown leatherette seats with yellow piping, brown door inserts, and a washed wood-look dash.
Attention has been paid to every design detail-from the retro-inspired wood-optic dash to the whimsical Play and Pause pedals from the 2017 BUZZ concept to ID. Buzz easter eggs scattered throughout the vehicle. The interior of the ID. Buzz is designed to be both nostalgic and functional. Reflecting a blend of retro charm and forward-thinking aesthetics, the cabin is characterized by an uncluttered layout with pops of color that echo the cheerful vibe of the classic Bus. The dashboard showcases a fully digital instrument cluster as well as a semi-floating central display and is complemented by a 30-color ambient lighting system that adds a personalized ambiance to the space. The spacious cabin focuses on maximizing comfort and utility.
ID. Buzz features plenty of storage options and ways to make using them easy. Every ID. Buzz comes with a Buzz Box: a removable, and highly configurable center console. It includes flexible storage on top, with two unique dividers that double as a bottle opener and ice scraper, as well as two additional compartments below. There is a 1.4-liter hinged compartment on the front side (for example, for a water bottle) and a 5.0-liter drawer opposite this for larger items such as laptops and tablets. The box can be locked between the front seats, or if second-row captain's chairs are fitted, the box can also be installed between them in two different positions that cater to the second or row occupants. In addition to the Buzz Box, all models feature spacious stowage areas in the doors, storage shelves in the dashboard, fold-out cupholders for the first row, and integrated cupholders and storage in the third row.
The wide-open greenhouse can be further enhanced by an available electrochromic smart glass roof, which changes from clear to opaque with the swipe of a finger. Available in a package on Pro S Plus models, and standard on 1st Edition models, the sunroof is 60.6 inches long and 36.6 inches wide. With a glass area of 15.4 sq ft, that makes it the largest of any in the Volkswagen Group. The roof works through a PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer integrated into the glass. Current is applied to the crystals in this layer to create transparency, with opacity happening when the PDLC layer is de-energized. Additional coating in the glass helps to reflect sunlight to help reduce the heat that could enter the vehicle.
Tech and Infotainment
Modern technology in the ID. Buzz offers a fully connected experience. In the cockpit, drivers are presented with two screens: the 5.3-inch ID. Cockpit and the 12.9-inch central infotainment display. The ID.Cockpit is an innovative digital display replacing the traditional instrument cluster, and is attached to the steering column, so that it's always positioned ideally in the line of sight. It features state of charge, range, and driving data, as well as navigation information when Apple Maps or the native navigation is used. The display is operated with touch-sensitive controls on the multifunction steering wheel which provide haptic feedback.
A head-up display is standard on the Pro S Plus trim. It floats information in the driver's line of sight, including digital speed, navigation information, and driver assistance system info and warnings. Area View, standard on Pro S Plus and 1st Edition trims, uses the car's four cameras to supplement the driver's view of what is around the vehicle.
All telematics, entertainment, driver-assistance systems, and vehicle settings are operated through the 12.9-inch infotainment display, which mirrors the upgraded setup on the 2024 ID.4 electric compact SUV. The touch sliders for volume and temperature are illuminated, and climate controls are integrated in the bottom of the display, allowing immediate access to these functions.
In the latest generation of Volkswagen's infotainment, operation has become simpler, more intuitive, and more customizable. The top bar of the display now has a new direct access function on the left, which opens the main menu with an overview of all apps with just one click. Next to it is a button for the new Car Control Center, which offers direct access to the most important vehicle functions, which can be configured individually. The main menu and the Car Control Center can be opened at any time without having to exit the active app. This significantly simplifies operation.
The new configurable home screen in the middle combines the content of the most important apps on tiles of different sizes. In addition to classic content such as navigation and radio/media, the tiles also offer new functions such as suggestions from the voice assistant, which has ChatGPT functionality through a Volkswagen Car-Net(R) Plus Speech with AI subscription.
The ID. Buzz also comes with the ID. Light system-a light strip that runs below the windshield and provides the driver with intuitive support. It uses various light pulses to signal status such as readiness to drive, turn instructions from the navigation system, brake prompts from driver-assistance systems, and incoming phone calls. When using voice commands, it signals that it is listening, similar to voice-activation on mobile phones or virtual assistants. When the ID. Buzz is plugged in to charge, the ID. Light indicates the current level of charge.
The Buzz makes it easy to connect and charge compatible devices. Wireless App-Connect and wireless charging are standard, with the 15W ventilated Qi charging console located just to the right of the steering wheel. Eight USB-C ports are located throughout the vehicle-two in the dashboard (shared 45W), one 15W in the rearview mirror housing, one 45W in the passenger door, and two each 45W in the second and third rows. In addition, there is a 110V/150W outlet under the passenger seat and a 12-volt power port in the cargo area.
A nine-speaker audio system comes standard. Pro S Plus and 1st Edition models upgrade to a 700-watt Harman Kardon(TM) premium audio system with 14 speakers, including a subwoofer, to amplify the listening experience.
SiriusXM with 360L. ID. Buzz models offer the most advanced audio entertainment platform-SiriusXM with 360L. SiriusXM with 360L combines satellite and streaming content delivery into a single, cohesive in-vehicle entertainment experience and provides more choice and a more personalized listening experience. Available by subscription (three-month trial subscription included), SiriusXM with 360L delivers more SiriusXM channels and an expansive library of on demand content, while personalized "For You" recommendations help listeners to discover more of what they love. An enhanced sports play-by-play offering makes it easier to find the listener's favorite team when it is game time and individual listener profiles allow multiple drivers and passengers to customize their own favorite channels.
Volkswagen Car-Net(R). For model year 2025 electric vehicles, myVW users can enroll in a number of Car-Net connected services such as: Remote Access EV, Safe & Secure EV, Vehicle Insights EV, and Wi-Fi Hotspot to name a few. The Vehicle Insights EV plan will be available this Fall at no additional charge for seven years from original vehicle in-service date. Users also receive three years of Plus Nav EV and Plus Speech with AI included with the purchase of any new 2025 EV.
Remote Access EV allows users the ability to interact with their vehicle via the myVW mobile app. It is offered at no additional charge for five years. Features include remote battery stop/start charging, newly available remote lock and unlock, remote climate controls, and the ability to search for charging stations and off-street parking.
With the Car-Net skill enabled on your Amazon devices, users can ask Alexa TM to send commands to their vehicle from the comfort of their own home-for instance: "Alexa, ask Car-Net to start charging my ID. Buzz." To set up, users who have an active Amazon account should open the skills page associated with their car model in their Alexa app and link the skill to their VW Car-Net account.
For vehicles equipped with factory-installed navigation systems, Car-Net can make customers' lives easier by locating charging stations, off-street parking information and sending destinations or points of interest directly to their car from the myVW app. The parking information feature, Powered by ParkopediaTM, is accessed through the Navigate tab on the app. Users can click the "P" icon to show available parking locations, either in the immediate vicinity or near a Point of Interest. Clicking on a specific location will display the address, hours of operation, and pricing. Users can also send the location to their car's navigation system, if so equipped, by clicking the "Send to Vehicle" button.
Safe & Secure EV is available for 2025 EVs at no additional cost for five years. Upon activation, this trial includes Emergency Assistance, Automatic Crash Notifications, and Information Assistance.
Emergency Assistance can be accessed through the SOS button in the vehicle, and, if a cellular connection can be established, puts the driver in contact with the Volkswagen Response center, which can direct emergency responders to the vehicle's location and notify the user's Emergency Contact. Provided a cellular connection can be established, Automatic Crash Notification can help automatically notify an operator who can quickly contact first responders in the event of a collision. Information Assistance-accessed through the i-call button within the vehicle-allows the driver to speak to a Volkswagen Response agent for support needs, such as points of interest and account services. To activate the plan, accept the Car-Net(R) Terms of Service during myVW sign up and then enroll in Safe & Secure located in the Shop section of the myVW app.
Coming this Fall, the new Vehicle Insights EV plan is available for seven years at no additional charge. For 2025 EVs, this plan offers access to vehicle health, status, and maintenance alerts. Vehicle Health Reports provide easy access to vehicle diagnostic information. Reports generate automatically each month after enrollment and are sent directly to the email address in the user's profile; updated reports can be requested anytime through the myVW mobile app. Users also have access to high voltage battery charge status and settings to customize target charge level, manage energy consumption, and adjust charging current. When activated, Battery Charge Care Mode helps prolong battery life and optimize charging times by automatically setting target charge level to 80%. Additionally, users can receive maintenance notifications when their vehicle may need attention at their local VW dealer.
A Wi-Fi Hotspot data plan subscription allows passengers to access the internet with up to four connected devices simultaneously, including compatible tablets, smartphones, laptops, gaming devices, and more-at 4G LTE-enabled speed. Volkswagen's Carrier of Choice gives our customers the option to select a Wi-Fi data plan from either VerizonTM or T-Mobile(R). With just a few clicks in the myVW mobile app or at vw.com/carnet, users can add their new Volkswagen vehicle to their existing mobile data plan or purchase a new one. Verizon Wireless or T-Mobile customers with an existing mobile data plan can simply add their Volkswagen vehicle as a new line item to their existing monthly bill; non-Verizon or T-Mobile customers can set up an unlimited plan for $20/month (taxes and fees may apply). With an active Wi-Fi data plan, the Plus Online radio subscription can be purchased to enable online internet radio with 30,000+ radio stations and podcasts.
For 2025 EVs, there are two packages to enhance the navigation and infotainment experience at no additional charge for three years: Plus Nav and Plus Speech with AI. The Plus Nav package allows drivers to access online map updates, traffic reports, charging information, and parking information. The Plus Speech with AI package offers advanced voice controls using natural language and generative AI integration. With the help of generative AI, users can get answers to a wider range of questions and requests.
To activate these connected features, users must download the myVW mobile app and accept the myVW and Car-Net terms of service. Some services mentioned require additional enrollment.
Comfort and Convenience
Comfort reigns supreme in the ID. Buzz. Standard three-zone Climatronic(R) automatic climate control keeps the cabin comfortable no matter the season, and all three rows have dedicated air vents. Second- and third-row windows are tinted for privacy, helping to maintain the interior temperature. When temperatures drop outside, the standard heated steering wheel keeps drivers cozy; heated windshield washer nozzles are standard and a heated windshield available on Pro S Plus 4Motion models, all helping to maximize efficiency.
Additionally, owners can use the Volkswagen myVW app to start heating or cooling the ID. Buzz. When plugged in to a charger, this uses energy from the grid rather than from the vehicle battery, helping to preserve range. Beyond those features, the ID. Buzz also has an electric resistance heater as part of the Climatronic system, which is designed to get to temperature faster than the traditional heaters from gas-powered vehicles, which can sometimes blow cold air until the engine warms up. This heater can also precondition the battery for DC fast charging-either automatically, when a charger is input as a destination in navigation, or manually triggered by the driver.
Rain-sensing wipers are standard, along with an auto-dimming rearview mirror. A control panel to the left of the steering wheel integrates the lighting functions, including the automatic headlights and defrosters.
The high seating position gives drivers excellent visibility. In addition to full perforated leatherette seating, all Buzz models are equipped with standard 12-way power driver and passenger seats with dual armrests, thigh extensions, ventilation, massage, and memory functions; front seats and second-row outboard seats are heated.
All rear-wheel-drive models come with a standard second-row bench seat, with capacity for seven passengers. The second-row bench can be folded flat in a 60:40 split and the seat backs can be raked by 16 degrees. In addition, the bench can be moved fore and aft by up to 7.9 inches, and it can be moved forward by 4.7 inches at the touch of a handle to allow for better third-row egress. Pro S Plus rear-wheel-drive models offer an available captain's chair package with seating for six, which comes standard on all 4Motion models. All ID. Buzz models have standard LATCH anchors along with tethers on all second and third row seats.
Third-row seats slide fore and aft, recline, fold flat, and are individually removable. Pro S Plus and 1st Edition models include a Flexboard, which creates a flat floor with the seats folded, and two fabric storage bins that slot beneath it.
Inside, the cabin is spacious, with 163.7 cubic feet of total passenger volume when equipped with the electrochromic glass roof. Legroom is a comfortable 37.5 inches for front passengers, 39.9 inches in the second row and 42.4 inches in the third row. Cargo volume is 18.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 75.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and a massive 145.5 cubic feet with the second row seats folded and third row removed.
Powertrain
Just as with the original Bus, the three-row ID. Buzz has a rear-mounted powerplant as standard, providing great traction, performance and agility. The new APP550 rear-mounted motor is a PMS (permanent magnet synchronous) design producing 282 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. It forms a module that is integrated into the rear axle together with the dual-stage one-speed gearbox and pulse inverter.
One of the main strengths of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is its efficiency-well above 90 percent in almost all driving situations. During the manufacturing process, Volkswagen uses a complex piece of technology known as a hairpin winding: the stator's coils are made from square copper wires, which after bending, are visually similar to hairpins. This hairpin winding technique enables the wires to be packed more tightly. As a result, there is more copper in the stator-power and torque are increased, while cooling is more efficient.
The essential elements of the drivetrain are the three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, the two-stage one-speed gearbox, and the inverter (power and control electronics). The increased power and efficiency of the APP550 electric motor are the result of details such as: a rotor with strong permanent magnets that offer a high thermal load capacity; a water heat sink for the outside of the stator; and a new, combined oil and water cooling system that also ensures higher thermal stability. The thermal stability is safeguarded by a new inverter generation, and the higher thermal load capacity is an elementary contributing factor to the increased efficiency of the new powertrain. Numerous gearbox components have also been friction-optimized and reinforced, and thus adapted to the high power and torque values.
Volkswagen developed the new inverter, including its software, entirely in-house. The module is multi-faceted: for example, it converts the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into the three-phase alternating current (AC) needed by the electric motor. It also controls the complete energy flow between the battery and motor. Any acceleration or recuperation is processed by this electronic brain. During recuperation, the inverter converts the generated alternating current into direct current that is then stored in the battery. It additionally monitors the temperature of the electric motor. This means the inverter-also referred to as the power and control electronics-has an important part in the vehicle's efficiency.
In all-wheel-drive models, the front AKA150 asynchronous motor (ASM) produces 107 hp and 99 lb-ft of torque for a combined system power of 335 hp. Top speed of the ID. Buzz is electronically limited to 99 mph. Unlike a traditional all-wheel-drive system, there are no mechanical links between the axles. Each motor connects to the wheels through a differential and a single-speed gearbox.
The variable all-wheel-drive system offers several benefits over traditional mechanical setups. The rear motor handles standard driving situations, leaving the front motor to engage only as needed, such as when the ID. Buzz senses wheelspin at any corner. The motors can react faster than any combustion engine-within a few hundredths of a second-so that the driver never notices the changes.
The EPA-estimated range on a full charge is 234 miles for rear-wheel-drive ID. Buzz models, with an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 90 MPGe in city driving; 75 MPGe on the highway; and 83 MPGe in combined city/highway driving. The EPA-estimated range for the ID. Buzz 4Motion models is 231 miles, with an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 87 MPGe in city driving; 74 MPGe in highway driving, and 80 MPGe in combined city/highway driving.
The 91-kWh battery has 13 cell modules. In detail, the battery assembly comprises the underbody guard, the battery housing frame, a base plate with its own integrated cooling system, the battery modules, a battery management system, a cell management controller, and the upper housing. The 91-kWh battery can be charged at a rate of up to 200 kW at DC fast-charging stations, allowing for 10 to 80 percent charging in about 26 minutes.
An innovative charging and thermal management function helps to make sure the battery is pre-conditioned ahead of the next charging stop. Thanks to this pre-conditioning, the ID. Buzz can be supplied with energy as quickly as possible, especially on long journeys with one or more charging stops. The battery is heated to the optimum temperature before the charging stop so it can accept energy at the maximum rate. This enables the charging time to be reduced by several minutes, particularly in winter. When the native navigation's route guidance with the Electric Vehicle Route Planner is active, pre-conditioning is started automatically on the way to the next quick-charging station. Without active route guidance, the function can also be manually activated using the charging menu in the Infotainment system. Routes with up to 10 charging stops and 10 stopovers can be planned on a smartphone or on the web portal and then transferred to the infotainment system of the ID. Buzz.
The 2025 ID. Buzz Charging Plan includes 500 kWh of charging at Electrify America, redeemable through the Electrify America app, plus three years of Electrify America's Pass+ membership, saving about 25% on charging compared to Guest and Pass membership base charging rates. Pass+ members can use the Electrify America app to select favorite charging stations, get notified when a charger opens up, start charging and track progress, and pay contact-free.
Electrify America is the largest open DC fast charging network with more than 900 stations and 4,000 chargers in North America. Additionally, it is the first open DC fast charging network to offer Plug&Charge technology to capable vehicles. By activating this feature in the Electrify America app, owners will be able to save time when using their included charging plan-just plug in the ID. Buzz at an Electrify America DC fast charging station and, once the connection is established, it will start charging. When charging a Volkswagen ID. Buzz on the Electrify America DC Fast-Charging network, the energy delivered to the vehicle is backed by 100% renewable energy.
Chassis
The efficient skateboard design of Volkswagen's MEB vehicles-with the battery mounted in the floor-not only saves space, but also contributes to better handling than a similar ICE vehicle by locating a large percentage of the vehicle's weight low down in the structure.
The ID. Buzz has a strut-type front suspension, with lower control arms, coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. The steering rack is located in front of the centerline of the wheels, to maximize stability during cornering. At the rear, the car has a compact multi-link suspension that features coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. While the chassis and body are made from steel, parts of the suspension are made of aluminum to reduce weight. With 3.42 turns lock-to-lock and a curb-to-curb turning radius of 37.4 feet, the ID. Buzz feels nimble, as compared with other people movers. Even the all-wheel-drive models have a tight turning radius of just 42.7 feet.
Drivers can decide for themselves how comfortable or sporty they want the ID. Buzz to be with the Driving Mode Selection. This influences the steering weight, throttle response, and electric drive motors. Four modes are standard: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom. Eco mode is designed for more efficient driving and tempers throttle response. Comfort mode ensures high driving comfort. Sport mode adds more responsive steering and throttle response; on all-wheel-drive models, it leaves the front motor engaged for maximum power. Custom allows a driver to blend between Comfort and Sport. All-wheel-drive models also offer Traction mode, which is intended specifically for driving on loose or slippery surfaces and features permanent all-wheel drive up to speeds of around 12 mph.
The vehicle dynamics control system balances performance and battery efficiency. This system, which works closely with the ESC stability control system, controls the wheel-selective brake interventions of the XDS(R) electronic transverse differential lock. It uses a digital target model to achieve optimum driving and steering behavior.
The ESC in turn cooperates closely with the control units for the electric motor and the power electronics. In rear-wheel-drive models, this networking is designed to ensure that the rear wheels of the ID. Buzz find grip in different situations-during acceleration, when cornering, and when the brake regeneration takes place. This type of traction control is speed-based and is another innovation from Volkswagen. It takes place automatically every millisecond, and is so fast and non-intrusive that the driver hardly feels any intervention.
In all-wheel-drive models, the vehicle dynamics system controls when the front-axle motor should engage. It also handles the XDS+ brake-based differential to optimize handling when cornering at speed: it gently brakes the wheels on the inside of the bend, thus turning the car slightly into the radius as required.
A combination of brake types is used on ID. Buzz. It features disc brakes on the front wheels and drums at the rear-the difference being specific to electric vehicle needs. As EVs rely on regenerative braking, the rear brakes get comparatively little use compared to a conventional ICE vehicle, plus there are friction advantages in using drums. The discs on the front of the ID. Buzz models are 15.0 inches, while the rear drum brakes are 13.0 inches. ID. Buzz also features Auto Hold, which keeps the vehicle at a standstill without requiring a foot on the brake.
The regenerative braking system in the ID. Buzz is designed for efficiency and offers the driver two modes. The D (Drive) position is the default mode, automatically activated upon start-up. In this position, the car can coast whenever the driver's foot is off the accelerator or brake pedal. As soon as the driver applies the brakes, energy recuperation is activated, and the electric drive motor feeds power back into the battery.
The B (Brake) position enables the driver to select a heavier amount of regeneration. Drivers can use the gear selector rocker switch to change from the D position to B at any time. In this mode, the vehicle's drive almost always recovers energy during lifting off, but not all the way to a standstill. The limit has been set at 0.13 g-enough for clearly noticeable deceleration that won't confuse drivers of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles: intuitive operation is one of the vehicles' greatest strengths.
During the majority of everyday braking maneuvers-up to around 0.25 g of deceleration-the electric drive motor performs the braking alone, while the electric brake servo only activates the friction brakes in situations that demand more stopping power. The transition from generator-based to hydraulic braking goes almost unnoticed, thanks to highly accurate and swift brake and drive system control. These systems also make sure that the rear wheels, where brake energy recuperation takes place, always have a sufficient amount of grip.
Safety and Driver Assistance
To help protect occupants, the ID. Buzz provides a combination of both passive and active safety-enhancing systems. It features seven airbags as standard (front and side airbags for front passengers and side curtain airbags for outboard seating positions), along with a number of electronic safety-related systems, such as an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). All ID. Buzz models feature a standard rearview camera.
A standard feature on the ID. Buzz is Volkswagen's Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. This builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact-the most significant of which can cause additional collisions. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System helps address this, in certain crash scenarios, by applying the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus potentially reducing residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage.
The ID. Buzz also includes Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System that unlocks the doors and switches on the hazard lights if the car is involved in certain types of collisions.
Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE(R) advanced driver assistance technology features hands-on semi-automated capability. On the highway, IQ.DRIVE features lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to help make driving easier. Around town, IQ.DRIVE can alert you to surprise obstacles in front of you, and keeps an eye around you to help make driving safer.
The IQ.DRIVE system is standard on all trims. The system utilizes front and rear radar, a front camera and several ultrasound sensors to collect data from the surrounding area, enabling Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance); Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring); Active Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor); Rear Traffic Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop and Go; Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System); and Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency).
Travel Assist enables semi-automated hands-on driving capability from 0 to 95 mph. Travel Assist can be activated by a button on the steering wheel and uses the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Assist (Lane Keeping Assist) features to help to steer as well as accelerate and brake the vehicle in response to traffic and center the vehicle within lane markings. This allows the driver to observe driving tasks while using minimal force on the wheel. It is the driver's responsibility to continuously monitor the system, remain alert, and maintain control of the vehicle at all times. To ensure this, Travel Assist monitors the capacitive steering wheel to make sure the driver has their hands on it. When Travel Assist is active, the cockpit display can show the lane markings (solid or dotted) and may also adjacent vehicles (car, motorcycle or box truck).
Front Assist is intended to warn drivers of potential frontal collisions (Forward Collision Warning) with vehicles and pedestrians, and in some cases provide automatic braking assistance (Automatic Emergency Braking). The system can detect cyclists or pedestrians traveling parallel to the vehicle and alert the driver.
Within physical system limits, Forward Collision Warning warns the driver of potential imminent front-end collision situations, both acoustically and visually by a warning symbol in the instrument cluster if the car is traveling above 18 mph. Furthermore, an automatic jolt of the brakes can warn the driver of the danger. If the driver fails to brake, Automatic Emergency Braking is activated to help slow the vehicle. If the car is traveling below 18 mph and the system detects a potential front-end collision, Automatic Emergency Braking activates without a prior acoustic and visual warning. If the brake pedal is applied but the driver brakes too lightly, the brake pressure can be increased by the system (Braking Support).
Side Assist uses two radar sensors at the rear of the vehicle to scan the approaching traffic and is intended to warn drivers of the presence of other vehicles in adjacent lanes. If the driver uses the turn signal to indicate a lane change while a vehicle is detected in a blind spot, the system utilizes a flashing LED symbol in the mirror housing. Even if the driver does not use a turn signal, the LED symbol in the mirror housing will illuminate if a vehicle is detected in the blind spot. The system is designed to help alert drivers in specific situations; stationary objects or oncoming vehicles do not trigger warnings, nor do vehicles more than one lane across away from the vehicle.
If Lane Assist is active, Side Assist becomes Active Side Assist and the system not only warns the driver with the flashing LED symbol if a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, but within system limits, it can also countersteer to help keep the car in its lane even if the turn signal is on. If the driver still tries to steer out of the lane, the system will warn with an additional vibration of the steering wheel.
The Rear Traffic Alert system is intended to detect vehicles approaching from the side that may be difficult for the driver to see while reversing. The system offers a 180-degree view of the back of the car, and will present a visual and an acoustic warning, if a potential collision with a crossing vehicle is detected. If the driver does not react, the system can apply the brakes to help mitigate and, in the best case, can prevent a collision. The system is activated by putting the car in reverse.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a forward-facing radar to maintain a set speed while helping maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front. The driver sets the speed and the desired spacing via buttons on the multifunction steering wheel and can further use those buttons to adjust and cancel the ACC function while the accelerator can be used to override the ACC function. Pressing the brakes always cancels the ACC function. All ACC-related system messages appear in the central multifunction display.
When the roadway ahead of the vehicle is clear, the system maintains the set speed. Models fitted with ACC can match speeds with a vehicle in front and come to a stop if the vehicle in front stops. If the car in front moves within three seconds, ACC will resume automatically to the set speed. If the car stands longer than three seconds, the driver can resume ACC control by pressing the accelerator pedal or the "resume" button on the steering wheel. If the driver continues to keep their hands on the steering wheel, the time that the vehicle can automatically resume can be extended beyond three seconds.
Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System) uses cameras to recognize lane markings and help drivers stay within them. When driving above 35 mph, if the system's camera recognizes visible lane markings and, using a special algorithm, calculates that the vehicle is unintentionally straying from its lane without using a turn signal, Lane Assist will vibrate the steering wheel to warn the driver, and then actively countersteer to help keep the vehicle in its lane. If the driver takes his or her hands off the wheel for a defined period of time, the system provides an audible warning and a visual signal in the instrument cluster, asking the driver to take over.
The system will not intervene if it cannot properly detect lane markings. If the turn signal has been set before crossing a lane marking, the Lane Assist system will not intervene or give a warning. The driver can override the system at any time by applying minimal force to the steering wheel.
Emergency Assist can bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver is incapacitated. Emergency Assist constantly monitors the driver's attentiveness by checking the input of their hands on the steering wheel. If the system does not detect driver input, a series of warnings (visual, audible, and brake jolts) will occur. If still no input is detected, Emergency Assist will slow the vehicle to a gradual stop in its own lane and activate hazard lights. Emergency Assist requires Lane Assist or Travel Assist to be active for the system to intervene.
In addition to IQ.DRIVE, the ID. Buzz has standard Exit Warning, Park Distance Control, Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking (not available in Puerto Rico), Dynamic Road Sign Display, and Light Assist (High Beam Control for headlights), plus available Head-up Display and Area View (Overhead View Camera).
The Exit Warning system warns the driver or passengers if they attempt to open a door while a detected vehicle or cyclist is approaching from behind. A warning signal will sound, and the yellow Blind Spot Monitor indicator in the side mirror will flash to warn the occupants of a detected hazard.
Park Distance Control, standard on all ID. Buzz trims, uses ultrasonic sensors located in the front and rear bumpers to monitor a range of up to approximately five feet in front or behind the vehicle. The system may activate below 9 mph and helps provide guidance when parking or in tight spaces. The system has audible and visual warnings when the car starts to approach parked cars or static objects of sufficient size from the rear.
Maneuver Braking, a part of the Park Distance Control system, is intended to mitigate or help prevent collisions with detected static obstacles to the rear while the vehicle is maneuvered. The system is active between 1-6 mph. If the system detects a stationary object, it can apply the brakes automatically to help prevent or mitigate a collision. The system can be deactivated at any time using the touch display or permanently in the setup menu.
Park Assist Plus is standard on all ID. Buzz models. This system can automatically park the car into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces (the latter both forward and in reverse) by automatically controlling the steering, throttle, braking, and gear changes. It can also assist with pulling out of a parallel parking space. While driving below 25 mph, pressing the Park Assist Plus button in the center console will activate the system to scan the left and right sides of the vehicle for parking spots. When the system detects a space, a message will appear in the multifunction display prompting the driver to stop. The driver only needs to press the brake and then press "Start" in the multifunction display for the vehicle to begin automatically maneuvering into the parking space. If there is an obstacle in its path, the vehicle will automatically apply the brake. Once cleared, parking will automatically resume. The driver can override or deactivate the system at any time by turning the steering wheel, pressing the brake, or pressing the button.
Memory Parking, standard on all ID. Buzz models, takes semi-automated convenience to the next level. Using this innovative driver assistance system, the vehicle can be taught up to five different parking maneuvers. The memory function remembers parking maneuvers at speeds below 25 mph with a travel distance of up to 164 feet; for example, for parking in a carport or garage. The driver just has to park once and save the parking maneuver. The vehicle can then repeat the learned parking maneuver autonomously while the driver monitors the process.
Dynamic Road Sign Display, standard on all ID. Buzz models, uses a forward-facing camera to detect and read road signs. After verifying the information with signage data stored in the onboard navigation, the system alerts the driver on the infotainment screen and on the ID.Cockpit.
Light Assist, standard on all ID. Buzz models, automatically switches on the headlamp high beams above 18 mph on dark or poorly lit roads, if there is no oncoming traffic detected. Below 12 mph, the high beams automatically switch off.
A head-up display is standard on the Pro S Plus trim. It floats information in the driver's line of sight, including digital speed, navigation information, and driver assistance system info and warnings. Area View, standard on Pro S Plus and 1st Edition trims, uses the car's four cameras to supplement the driver's view of what is around the vehicle.
Warranty, Maintenance & Roadside Assistance
Every 2025 ID. Buzz comes with a bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty, a limited warranty covering the high-voltage battery, and Carefree Maintenance Program. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty provides coverage for four years or 50,000-miles (whichever occurs first), and can be transferred to a subsequent owner throughout the remainder of its duration. The high-voltage battery has a limited warranty for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, for defects in material and workmanship and for net capacity loss below 70%. This can also be transferred to a subsequent owner throughout the remainder of its duration.
The Carefree Maintenance Program provides scheduled maintenance services at one year or 10,000 miles (whichever occurs first) and two years or 20,000 miles (whichever occurs first) at no additional charge, and can be transferred to a subsequent owner throughout the remainder of its duration.
ID. Buzz models also receive complimentary coverage in the Volkswagen 24-Hour Roadside Assistance Program for three years or 36,000 miles (whichever occurs first). The Roadside Assistance program offers out-of-charge service, which provides roadside charging or towing for an out-of-charge battery, depending on distance to nearest charging station (towing up to 100 miles). Also included are the following services for disablements due to mechanical breakdown or collision: flatbed towing to the nearest VW e-mobility dealership in cases of mechanical breakdown, collision towing, flat tire service, lock-out service, and trip interruption benefits.
