Los Angeles hosts the first auto show of the 2013 season. As the first opportunity to display new vehicles for the next year, manufacturers typically use LA to showcase cars and trucks that have already been revealed at other international shows. But since the California automotive market embodies environmental consciousness and extreme extravagance, automakers often debut their greenest and most gas-guzzling vehicles to LA. Fiat finally revealed the production 500e, the EV version of its tiny coupe, to be sold in California only. A larger 500L, first revealed in Geneva, will be the second model in Fiat's US lineup. Porsche unveiled the new Cayman coupe, following the Boxster introduction earlier this year. Ford showed the Fiesta ST, its most affordable sport compact entry. Jaguar's XFR-S is the pinnacle in the XFR model range, while the new F-Type convertible is the successor to the unforgettable E-Type. The Chevrolet Spark EV, like the Fiat 500e, is another electric car intended to satisfy California's government mandates. Audi introduced diesel versions of the A6, A7, and A8, but the RS5 coupe should excite enthusiasts. Honda's revised Civic should address complaints by the automotive press, but Civic buyers continue to be loyal to this popular compact. Toyota showed a redesigned RAV4, a long-awaited update to its compact crossover. Kia's new Forte sedan should continue to steal value-conscious customers from the Japanese and American brands. The 2012 LA Auto Show continues to grow in its importance as a major US auto show, especially in its role as a showcase for alternative energy vehicles.
