Frankfurt hosts the biggest European auto show, and the showcase for the German auto industry. Although Europe's automakers are still grappling with shrinking vehicles sales, at Frankfurt the outlook seemed most positive, especially from BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. At the Mercedes-Benz hall at Frankfurt were the new Concept S-Class Coupe and compact GLA crossover, along with the self-driving S-Class sedan. BMW revealed the production versions of the hybrid i3 city car and i8 sports car, as well as the 4-Series coupe. The Nanuk quattro and Sport quattro concepts hint at future sport coupes from Audi. Opel's Monza concept is a gull-winged coupe far removed from the original Monza from the 1970s. Peugeot introduced the 308 compact hatchback, and Renault's Initiale crossover concept attracted its share of attention. Renault's partner Nissan transformed the X-Trail into a crossover, which will become the new Rogue in the US. Infiniti's new Q30 hatchback is aimed at the entry luxury market in Europe, a new segment for Nissan's premium brand. The Lexus LF-NX concept hints at an upcoming compact crossover positioned below the RX. Mazda showed the new Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback. Jaguar's C-X17 is the first crossover from a brand known for luxury sedans and sports cars. The Elmiraj concept from Cadillac is likely the next luxury coupe in its lineup. Of all these new vehicles at Frankfurt, the compact crossover seems to be the market segment that nearly every major company aspires to be in. More significantly, European manufacturers are determined not to let the recession in the home market dampen their future plans.
