While the SUV craze largely passed Jeep by, the Grand Cherokee enjoyed its loyal following. Thus designing the 3rd generation became a daunting task. While buyers wanting more size, luxury, or seating moved on, the faithful wanted their Jeep to remain as it was. All new from the ground up, the new Grand Cherokee hasn't changed noticeably in any interior dimension, but the new platform is about 5 in longer and the track almost 3 in wider. In Laredo and Limited trim levels, the Grand Cherokee offers a 210hp V6, a 230hp V8, and an optional 325hp HEMI (R) V8. An all new 5-speed automatic is the only available transmission. Three 4WD systems are offered as well as a 2WD model. Other mechanical highlights include rack-and-pinion steering and an independent front suspension. Completely new, the new Grand Cherokee represents a refinement rather than a re-invention
All-new 2005 is 5 in longer with a 3 in wider track. Standard 210hp V6 replaces inline-6. Two V8s offered, the 230hp 4.7L V8 and the 325hp 5.7L HEMI (R) V8. Rack-and-pinion steering is added. Grand Cherokee is offered in Laredo and Limited trim levels, in 4x2 or 4x4. Three different 4WD systems are offered.
