Even though it is the most fuel-efficient car sold in the US, the Honda Insight doesn't have a high profile. Perhaps it's due to the Insight's drag-optimized shape, and room for only two passengers. The Insight is powered by a 1.0L inline-3 and a 10 kW electric motor that provides a power boost when required. Honda calls it Integrated Motor Assist or IMA. A 144-volt/6.5 Amp.-hr. capacity NiMH battery pack supplies the electric motor. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual or a CVT. The gasoline engine can shut down when the Insight is stopped, and seamlessly restart when the transmission is put in gear. The engine is optimized for fuel economy with lean-burn combustion, and a low friction VTEC-E valvetrain.
