This compact Jeep will outrage the faithful, since it is not designed for serious off-road excursions. Based on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber, the Compass offers a 172-bhp 2.4L I-4, FWD or 4WD, and a locking center differential. Transmission choices include a standard 5-speed manual or optional CVT. Outside North America, a 2.0L turbodiesel engine will be available. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels can be upgraded to 18-inch alloy or chrome-clad wheels. A Boston Acoustics audio system features liftgate mounted speakers, ideal for tailgate parties.
Although based on the same platform as the new Jeep, the Compass is a radically different vehicle for Jeep to offer. Where the intent is to market the Patriot to the "trail-rated" crowd, the Compass is for on-road adventures more akin to its other platform mate, the Dodge Caliber. Offered in FWD and AWD configurations, all versions of the Compass are powered by a 172hp four-cylinder.
