The flashy Altima midsize sedan led Nissan's US sales revival. Therefore, for the new Altima, Nissan retained the sleek styling that made it such a hot seller. Although current customers will easily recognize it, the 2007 Altima uses the new Nissan D-platform chassis, and is slightly shorter than the current model. Equal length halfshafts should reduce torque steer for enhanced handling. A completely redesigned interior retains the sporty styling, but with upgraded plastics and metal trim. Powerplant choices remain the 2.5L I-4 (>165-bhp) and 3.5L V-6 (>265-bhp), both available with a new Xtronic CVT or a new 6-speed manual. A new hybrid model (HEV) should provide a competitive alternative to the equivalent Accord and Camry models.
The Altima is all-new for 2007. Altima switches to a new FWD "D" segment platform. Engine choices include a 165 hp 4-cylinder and a 265 hp V6. A new six-speed manual will be offered with both engines. A CVT transmission will be offered in lieu of a standard automatic transmission. A gas/electric hybrid model will be added later in the model year.
