The Mitsubishi i aims to be one of the first widely available electric cars that's also affordable. The i has seating for four passengers in a body that is about the same size as a Mini Cooper. The i is much smaller than the Leaf or Volt, but is available at a substantially lower price than either vehicle. A 49kW AC synchronous motor mounted in the rear of the vehicle drives the rear wheels. According to the EPA, the driving range is about 62 miles on a full charge. An in-vehicle charger can plug in to any 120V AC outlet and recharge the batteries in about 22 hours. Most owners will want a dedicated 240V charger which shortens the time to just 7 hours. An optional DC quick charge port connects to publicly available chargers which can provide an 80% charge in 30 min. The number of electric cars on the market is rapidly expanding. The Mitsubishi might be the most cost effective way to become an early adopter.
